Thaci: Judicial process risks distorting Kosovo's history, KLA war

Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci has provided an interview by The Hague for the renowned German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, where he has declared there is the danger of the judicial process against him and former KLA leaders distorting the historical meaning of the events of the 1990s in Kosovo. In a response given by The Hague, [...]
In a response given by The Hague, Thaci stressed that events at the time are well documented by international reports, organisations and judicial institutions, adding that it is not about interpretation, but about <x0-facts consolidated”.
Thaci stressed that the judicial process should not be used to rewrite history or to minimize the real suffering of the people of Kosovo during the war.
This is a legitimate concern shared by the overwhelming majority of people in Kosovo and beyond. The events of the '90s are well documented. It is not a matter of interpretation is part of the consolidated evidence, recorded through diplomatic documents and reports of international organisations, courts and observers on the ground. The so-called evidence manufactured during the Milosevic era should neither be used in any court nor treated as proven fact. Many of what were manufactured served to influence, not to tell the truth. If we accept this, it would be no surprise if Putin's future claims and factories were accepted as true and used against President Zelenski and Ukrainian resistance. By contrast, Kosovo has never attacked, under no circumstances, no inch of Serbian territory. We should remember that the people of Kosovo were fighting against oppression; he was fighting for his right to exist. It was about his survival as a people. This process should not be used to rewrite history and reduce the real suffering of a people”, Thaci has declared for Frankfurter Allgemine Zeitung.
Former President Thaci also talked about NATO bombings in 1999 that he said came to our aid because NATO understood who we were, what we were representing and what we were experiencing under Milosevic.
NATO's 1999 intervention was guided by the fundamental Western values of freedom, justice, human rights and the protection of human life. NATO came to our aid because it understood who we were, what we represented and what we were experiencing under Milosevic. They saw our situation. At the international conference in Rambouille, France, in 1999, our delegation accepted peace, while Serbia chose ethnic war, oppression, and cleansing. Our decision reflected our commitment to dialogue and democratic principles. I'm sorry that Madeleine Albright, Richard Holbrooke, Robert Dole and others are no longer alive. They would be extraordinary witnesses in this court. They understood the context and goals of the people of Kosovo, as well as Milosevic's determination to ethnic cleansing. Serbia attacked Kosovo, and the people of Kosovo resisted. Without the resistance of the people of Kosovo and without NATO intervention, Kosovo would not exist today. Kosovo Albanians would not exist. The people of Kosovo did what any oppressed people would do in the face of a existential danger”, Thaci said.
