Donald Trump has sexually abused former journalist and writer E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s, and then damaged her reputation by calling her a liar, the nine members of the New York jury came to this conclusion Tuesday after weighing for about three hours, arguments and facts regarding a civil indictment against the former president.
The latter is expected to pay Mrs. Carroll a $5 million compensation.
The jury's decision comes at a time when Mr. Trump is conducting a campaign to re-elected at the head of the White House.
The jury of six men and three women made a unanimous decision regarding the case.
Former reporter and writer E. Jean Carroll accused Mr. Trump of raping. According to her, the event occurred at a luxury store in Manhattan in 1996.
But Mr. Trump denied it by calling the charges fraud. On Monday, when presenting the closing arguments, Mr. Trump's lawyer, Joe Tacopina, said Mrs. Carroll's story is too suspicious to believe. According to Mr. Tacopina, she set up the story with the intention of selling a book of memories published in 2019 and politically denigrating Mr. Trump. But on Tuesday, the jury decided in favor of the writer.
In the polarised political climate that exists in the country, it seems impossible for the jury's verdict to have an impact on Mr. Trump's main supporters, who see his legal challenges as part of a co-ordinated effort by his opponents to damage him.
