On Tuesday, German Minister of Foreign Affairs held a telephone conversation with Albania's Foreign Minister, Olta Gacka. In January, he paid his first visit to Berlin, Montenegrin Foreign Minister Djordje Radulovic was in Berlin Serbian Foreign Affairs Minister Nikola Selakovic, and Bosnia and Herzegovina's Foreign Minister is expected to come in the coming weeks.
US for Co-ordination Solutions With EU
In addition to the European perspective of the Western Balkans, one of the main topics at the meetings is normalising relations between Serbia and Kosovo.
German Minister of Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas said after meeting with his Serbian counterpart, Nikola Selakovic, that the Joe Biden administration is interested in having a solution to co-ordination with the EU and that he himself is waiting for the new government's establishment in Pristina.
Not Change of Borders
As for Albin Kurti's recent statements, which will likely be Kosovo's new prime minister for joining Albania, Maas said that “Dinations for changing or shifting borders do not lead us to”.
Heiko Maas and Nikola Selakovic
In parallel with talks between Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and Minister of State Michael Roth, at the beginning of the week in Pristina was visiting EU special representative for the normalisation dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia Miroslav Lajčac. Just days earlier, the US State Department had underlined US support for this EU-led dialogue aimed at normalisation and a comprehensive agreement with mutual recognition.
The election of Joe Biden as US president thus offers the opportunity to operate once again at the transatlantic level and with determination to reconcile, democracy and economic development in the Western Balkans, a German MPJ statement said.
The Berlin Process
One of the topics that remains open to be clarified by summer is how the Berlin Process will proceed. His last conference will be held in summer this year in Berlin, for the last time under the leadership of Chancellor Merkel. In what form this initiative will continue is still unclear. /dw/
