Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a draft law Friday that envisions prison sentences of up to 15 years for false news against the Russian Army, while Moscow is moving ahead with its invasion in Ukraine.
The bill, adopted by lawmakers, envisions prison conditions at different lengths and fines against people publishing “false information knowingly” for the military,
Putin also signed a bill that would allow fines or imprisonment of up to three years for calling for sanctions against Russia, Russian media reports, Periscopi broadcast.
Last year, an unprecedented blow to independent voices and criticism in Russia that intensified only after the invasion began.
Likewise today, the Russian state media control agency “Roskomnandor” completely blocked Facebook, amid tensions over the war in Ukraine.
The agency said on Friday that it decided to stop FB, as it puts it, “due to Russian media discrimination” and state sources of information. She said that Facebook restrictions imposed on Russian state media as RT are in violation of Russian law.
“Roskomnandor” had temporarily blocked Facebook a week ago, slowing it down significantly. Facebook and Twitter platforms have played a major role in helping the Russian opposition in recent years.
