Kurti stressed his role in supporting Kosovo in Congress, supporting NATO's intervention in halting genocide in Kosovo, as well as supporting Kosovo's independence.
“Elios Engel had long been honoured with commemorations in Kosovo even before the boulevard in the town of Peja got his name through his powerful voice in Congress, where he was among the first and most determined members to condemn Milosevic's genocide campaign. He supported NATO's intervention to prevent the Serbian genocide, backed Kosovo's declaration of independence and warned of Russia's malicious influence in Europe. Personally, and on behalf of the country, we receive the news of his separation from life with deep sorrow, but with permanent gratitude for his service”, Kurti wrote on X.
Kurt added that Engel “will live forever in our hearts and minds as an example of what public service can achieve and democracy that can flourish when people rise to what is right”.
Engel, a Democrat, had served in Congress for over three decades and had left in 2021.
He has been the main collector of Congress support for recognising Kosovo's independence from Serbia in 2008.
Firm support for Kosovo, over the decades, made it famous in Kosovo.
Kosovo has named a road and highway to honour Engel and has even issued a stamp with his picture.
