Ben Meir warns Kurt: Normalising Kosovo- Serbia won't happen before US elections

American expert for the Western Balkans, Alon Ben Meir, has responded to Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, who has said Kosovo and Serbia should normalise the reports before the allies start dealing with elections in the United States and the European Union. In an interview for “Bloombergun” in Slovenia, Kurti [...]
In an interview for “Bloombergun” in Slovenia, Kurti had said there is a “sense of urgency to implement the agreement and normalise reports between Kosovo and Serbia, with mutual recognition at the centre, later by next year's spring”.
In this regard, the American professor has said that Prime Minister Kurti must understand that normalising Kosovo-Serbia relations will not happen before the US elections, despite what is being served by Serbia at the time by the US and the EU.
When he declared that there is “a sense of urgency” to implement the agreement and normalise relations between Kosovo and Serbia prior to the US presidential elections in 2024, he seems to suggest this emergency has been prompted because the US and the EU also want to distance Serbia from Russia's influence. Yes, this may be the ultimate goal of the US and the EU, but Kurti must realise that normalising relations between his country and Serbia will not happen before the US elections, regardless of what the US and the EU offer Serbia at this point”, he has written.
According to Ben Meir, Kurti can help the normalisation process initially by addressing the unresolved election issues and the Association of Serbian municipalities and lower tensions with Serbia.
He emphasises that in his latest interview for Bloomberg, Kurti appears to ease his stance regarding the need for new elections in Serb majority municipalities in northern Kosovo, as well as implementation of the Serbian Communists Association.
In addition to the urgency of implementing the normalisation agreement, Kurti has said he is also ready for the organisation of new municipal elections in the north, under the agreement reached with the European Union's special immigrant, Miroslav Lajcak.
For him, returning to the Ohrid Agreement is the only way forward.
The Agreement is still on the table”, Kurti said.
