Newly appointed British Ambassador to Belgrade Edward Ferguson, in an interview with “Kurir.rs”, media this extremely close to Serbian power, has said “When we understand, we also create understanding” talking about issues between Kosovo and Serbia, until he added that “for Serbia that means Kosovo is home to 1.7 million Albanians who did not want to be part of Serbia”.
“Clearly, there is no easy answer”, Ferguson said, “but that, ultimately, will call for compromise”.
“As a negotiator, I think it's important to put yourself on the other side. For the people of Kosovo, I think it is important to accept that Serbia has some legitimate concerns; for the security of the Serb community and for the protection of cultural heritage. For the people of Serbia, this means acknowledging that Kosovo is home to 1.7 million Albanians who refused to be part of Serbia. With the correct understanding of things comes trust, and compromise can be reached with confidence”, Edward Ferguson said.
Asked about MP Alicia Kearns' claims that the Serbian Orthodox Church is carrying weapons in Kosovo, Ferguson said its views “are hers” and that “does not represent the official view of Britain's Government”.
“KFOR has confirmed that they have no evidence that the Serbian Orthodox Church is involved in arms smuggling from Serbia to Kosovo, and neither do we.”, Ferguson concluded.
