Ukrainian MP to the Council of Europe Oleksandr Merezhko, speaking of Serbia's terrorist attack in Kosovo, has said he remembers the beginning of the Russian invasion in Ukraine.
During a discussion at the Parliamentary Assembly, it has added that, through Belgrade, Russia is trying to launch another war in the Balkans.
The situation in Kosovo is very disturbing and reminds me of the beginning of the Russian invasion in Ukraine in 2014. The style of involvement seems familiar, as if someone is acting on Putin's behavioral patterns. I do not rule out the possibility that Russia, with the help of its representatives in the Balkans, is trying to provoke a new Balkan war to draw attention from the invasion in Ukraine”, Merezhko said.
He further stressed that Serbia has used the issue of the Serb community in Kosovo as a political tool to start something bigger.
“Every Balkan state, including those created as a result of a genocide committed against them, deserves to be independent and free of external interventions. Some states in the Balkans should ban the use of national minorities in neighbouring states as a political tool against the sovereignty of those states”, he declared in the KiE.
To become Serbia member of the European Union, Merezhko said certain conditions must be met.
“I believe Serbia can become an EU member only if it secedes from its past, recognises Kosovo de-jure and joins the EU in imposing sanctions on Russia”.
“I don't believe Vuciq has any illusions of the possibility of establishing control over Kosovo. Sounds like a political game to me. Vuciq is using the issue of recognising Kosovo as leverage in this” game.
