Reaching 15 thousand foreigners living in Albania, half to work; Iran, Italy and Kosovo head

According to INSTAT, at the end of 2021, the number of foreigners with residence permits in Albania resulted in 14,921 residents, undergoing growth of 9.6% compared to 2020.

The number of residents in 2021 is dominated by men with 63.0, % against women by 37.0%.

The number of applications for residence permits in Albania in 2021 was 9,106 applications, marking an increase of 18.9% compared to 2020.

Foreign residents originally from Iran, Italy and Kosovo make up the largest number of foreigners with residence permits in Albania to 2021, with 2,586, 2.324 and 1,869, respectively.

Foreigners originally from Europe, in 2021, resulted in 8,812 residents, making up 59.1% of total foreigners against 56.8% in 2020.

The reason for employment is the main reason for foreign residence permits in Albania in 2021, with 47.7%.

In 2021, 10,062 irregular foreigners were registered in the territory of the country where most of them, occupied by foreigners from Syria and Afghanistan with 67.0%.

Foreigners originally from America, Africa and the Ocean are 1,887, undergoing an increase of 2.7%, compared to 2020.

Foreigners in Albania According to Place of Origin 

In 2021, residents in Albania of origin from Iran are 2,86 people, marking a decline of 0.9%, compared to 2020. Foreigners originally from Italy are 2,324 people, marking an increase of 12.4%, compared to 2020. Kosovo-born foreigners are 1,869 people, marking an increase of 21.2%, compared to 2020.

Foreigners in Albania for Reason 

In 2021, residents of employment reasons occupied 47.7% of total foreigners, followed by reasons for family reunion with 24.1%, reasons for humanitarian purposes of 17.8%, reasons for studies of 2.8% and other reasons of 7.5%.

Iranian-born foreigners are largely dominated by humanitarian reasons for obtaining permission to stay in Albania (99.3%).

Among resident foreigners in Italy-born Albania, in addition to the reason for family reunion (61.7%) there is also a dominance of the reason for employment (17.5%).

Foreigners originally from Kosovo are led by reasons for employment (42.3%) and the reasons for family union (29.1%).

Foreigners originally from Turkey are led by reasons for family union (69,2%) and the reasons for employment (28.9%).

Unremarked foreigners on Albania's territory or on the border, without necessary documentation, result in 10,062 people in 2021, against 18.835 people in 2020.
