These orders have been given in response to questions about reports that war crimes convicts in Serbia are actively participating in election campaigns, while some accused even are on the list as participants in the elections.
Ana Pisonero, European Commission spokeswoman, has reiterated calling for leaders in the region to work in the spirit of reconciliation.
“The EU has a clear principled position on the need for reconciliation and attitudes towards the events of war. The electoral process is under way and we reiterate the importance of comprehensive and creditable elections, held in line with existing laws and the international standards”, she said Thursday during a media conference.
As for the participation of war criminals in the election campaign, the EU spokeswoman has said:
There is no place in Europe for denying genocide, revision and degrimination of war criminals, which runs contrary to the most fundamental European values. Attempts to rewrite history are unacceptable”.
