Russian lawmakers have adopted a bill condemning the distribution of <x0 reports for” for military operations, at the time of closing independent media about covering Russian war in Ukraine.
The bill, adopted on 4 March, will be added as a special article in the Penal Code, “to prevent the Red Federation armed forces from discrediting during their operations to protect the interests of the Russian Federation and its citizens, and to preserve international peace and security”.
The new law envisions sentences of up to 10 years in prison for individuals convicted of these violations.
The sentence for spreading false news to the Russian Army, which leads to “serious consequences”, grows to up to 15 years.
The bill has made it illegal to call against the Russian troops' commitment, to protect Russia's interests” or to “discredit such force”.
The same sentences apply to calls for Russia to be sanctioned.
This decision comes after Russian authorities have stepped up pressure on independent media, threatening them for their war reports in Ukraine.
Media regulator Roskomnadzor has ordered the media to publish only information provided by official sources.
It prohibits the description of Russian actions in Ukraine as invasion or war, and requires that <x0) special military operations be named”
On March 4th, Roskomnadzor said he had “defined “access to independent media, including some pages of Radio Free Europe, Russian canal sites, BCC and Deutsche Welle, as well as platforms, Facebook and Google.
Moscow's attack on Ukraine has started in the early hours of February 24th.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered <x0 special operation” to demilitarise Ukraine.
Putin, said Thursday, March 3rd, that “special military operation” in Ukraine is going according to plan and has considered Russian soldiers to be heroes.
Putin's TV comments have been in conflict with statements by Western governments and intelligence agencies that Putin's military campaign is facing logistical problems, tactical errors and greater resistance than expected by Ukraine.
The Kremlin's action has stirred anger and has been condemned worldwide.
The United States and its allies have responded with severe sanctions against Moscow.
