More and more poor people in Afghanistan are making desperate decisions as their country slides into poverty, with several eyes even taking drastic measures to sell their organs.
In the western province of Herath, people in dire need of money have risked their lives by selling their kidneys. The country's aid-dependent economy was already on the decline when the Taliban took power in mid-August, amid a chaotic withdrawal of US and NATO troops.
The international community froze Afghanistan's assets abroad and banned all funding, unwilling to co-operate with the Taliban government, the cause of its notorious reputation during rule 20 years ago.
The results have been devastating for a country hit by four decades of war, with a lack of jobs and increasing economic challenges that hit most vulnerable members of society.
