Three missiles left Lebanon towards northern Israel Thursday, but fell into the Mediterranean Sea, causing no damage or casualties, the Israeli army said.
According to France24, the missile strike threatened to open a new front in the escalating fighting between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.
Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) on Thursday said three rockets were fired from Lebanon in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of northern Israel in a Twitter post.
The IDF did not elaborate on who issued them, but two sources near Israel's enemy Hezbollah told AFP that the Lebanese Shiit group had nothing to do with the incident.
“Pac earlier, three rockets were launched from Lebanon in the Mediterranean Sea on the shores of Galilee”, Israel's army was quoted as saying in a statement.
“Following protocol did not hear sirens”.
So far, notes France24, there was no immediate comment from Beirut on the incident.
Missiles from Lebanon came from “idis with a escalation of fighting between Israel and Hamas”, writes France24, traces the Telegrafi.
Earlier Thursday, the Palestinian militant group opened a hail of rockets in Israel. Hours later, Israel hit Gaza with artillery and tanks, forcing families to flee their homes, Palestinian witnesses said.
Use of artillery fire in Israel's four-day offensive increased the likelihood of civilian casualties.
