“We are focused on supporting the European Union-led process that will lead to an agreement between Serbia and Kosovo”, Matthew Palmer, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Special Representative for the Western Balkans, has said. Palmer expressed his stance during an interview for the Western Balkans, organised by Balkan Insider an internet portal dealing with issues related to the Balkans.
The US diplomat stressed what he says, the ideal form, agreement between Serbia and Kosovo that will send mutual recognition.
<x) For Serbia and Kosovo and their governments to sit down and work on finding the way to normalising relations”, Palmer says.
“We support the process, so I think it's insignificant and destructive to talk about topics like exchange of territories. We need to think about what needs to be done so that negotiating participants can progress towards a comprehensive agreement that would bring an end to the” dispute once and for all, he has said.
In the part of the presentation for Serbia and Kosovo, the special representative of the State Department for the Western Balkans recalled that both sides renewed talks led by the European Union and Miroslav Lajcak when it marked him as a dear friend and close associate.
I'm just glad I'm back in business. I've recently met here in Washington with Skender Hyseni . Kosovo's representative in that process. There is much work ahead of them that foreign participants in the negotiations are committed to making the progress needed to reach a comprehensive agreement on normalising relations. Such an agreement would restore relations in the region and encourage all Western Balkan countries that are on the path to membership in the European Union,” underlined Palmer.
