France on alert, temperatures near record levels

France placed 35 departments under the highest red heat wave alert Sunday, while another 45 remained under the orange alert, as authorities warned that temperatures could approach record levels in the coming days, according to RTL.
National weather agency Meteo-France said temperatures could reach a local level of 41 degrees Celsius on Sunday and warned that Monday is expected to be even hotter, reports Anadolu.
The agency said the average national temperature could coincide with the highest daily level ever recorded in France, regardless of the season.
Maximum temperatures are projected to range between 40 degrees Celsius and 42 degrees Celsius in areas below red alert.
Meteo-France said the heat wave is expected to continue during much of next week, with extremely high temperatures during the day and night likely to continue until at least Thursday.
Also on Sunday, it placed four departments under a warning of high forest fire risk and said the number will rise on 11 on Monday, as hot and dry conditions continue in different parts of the country.
Authorities have not ruled out extending red alert to other departments Monday. /Periscopi
