Our food systems are failing, and the pandemic with Covid-19 is worsening things”, Guterres said in a video message on June 9th.
The United Nations has estimated that more than 820 million people worldwide are hungry until 144 million children under the age of five do not grow up properly.
Guterres has warned that some 49 million people can face extreme poverty this year because of pandemic.
If no immediate steps are taken, it is clear that there will be a global food emergency in the near future, which can have long-term impact on hundreds of millions of children and adults”, he said.
The World Bank has estimated on June 8th that 71 million to 100 million people will face extreme poverty due to pandemic.
Guterres has called for better protection of workers in the food sector, for more support to food producers, and for avoiding obstacles to the transport chain so that humanitarian aid can be sent to those in need.
