The European Union Council appointed former Slovakia Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak as EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and other regional issues of the Western Balkans on Friday.
Through a statement, the Council says that the “departaries of the new EU Special Representative will be achieving a comprehensive normalisation of relations between Serbia and Kosovo, improving good neighbourly relations and reconciliation between partners in the Western Balkans, helping them overcome the legacy of the past”.
Lajcak's initial mandate will be 12 months.
That Lajcak's appointment to this position would take place was much earlier warned by sources within the European Union.
Kosovo President Hashim Thaci had declared that his “mission is destined to fail”.
His “Mission has been created to fail because of its commitment to prevent Slovakia from recognising Kosovo”, Thaci had declared.
Lajcak is a Slovak diplomat who previously served as minister of foreign affairs in Slovakia and as president of the UN General Assembly for the 72nd session (2017-2018).
He was the EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2007-09, while also acted as the international community's High Representative there.
As a personal envoy of EU High Representative Lajcak on behalf of the European Union, he supervised Montenegro's independence referendum in 2006.
