Sanders said Friday that American officials had told him last month about Russian efforts to help his campaign.
Speaking in Bakersfield, California, Mr. Sanders said it was not clear how Russia intended to intervene.
But Vermont's senator, 78, said he strongly opposed any attempts to do so.
He condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin as a <x0ocrat”, whose government “has used internet propaganda to plant divisions in our country”.
“Let's be clear, the Russians want to undermine American democracy by dividing us and, unlike the current president, I stand firm against their efforts and any other foreign powers that want to interfere in our elections,” said Mr. Sanders.
