The clash erupted at 2:30 p.m. with the local time in the Mexican state prison in Zacatecas, with local media reporting that the case involved a soccer match.
The Public Security Ministry did not comment on the cause of the clash, but said in a statement that the prison situation is now under control and that the names of those killed will be disclosed.
After a fight, a gun was found in one of the convicts. Three more weapons and various types of knives were found in additional police research.
The government has launched an investigation to determine who was responsible for the launch of the shooting, as well as how the weapons went to prison.
After that event, security measures will increase in prisons throughout this country in northern Mexico.
Mexican prisons are the scene of frequent unrest and violence that often end up in fatalities.
At least 28 convicts were killed in a brutal clash that erupted in 2017 in a prison in Acapulco, the Kosovo Press broadcasts.
