The level of respect for language rights in Kosovo is not satisfactory. Although there has been an effort to improve the situation, reports provide full disregard for the law.
So said the Office of the Commissioner for Languages under the Office of the Prime Minister, who spoke of the annual report on the “theme. Applying the Law to Use of Languages: Tasks and challenges”
Slavisa Mladenovic from the Office of the Language Commissioner has said political will is also lacking to improve respect for language rights.
“Nivel of respect for language rights in Kosovo is not satisfactory, many media and NGO reports show that complaints we accept in the office of the commissioner for language, even though we have made efforts to improve the current situation, still face full implementation of language law, and yet there are similar reasons that we have no capacity and in some situations still lack political readiness”, Mladenovic said.
He said software equipment has been purchased in the second part of 2018, which has built the capacity and quality of translations into institutions and governments.
“In 2018 we have had great attention to the capacity of institutions and one of the activities we've done in the second part of 2018 were the tools with translation software provided to institutions and we've done without donor funds from the office, all translations except one have accepted software and made training for that software which is one of the most advanced translations in the world, the focus has been to improve the quality of translations of sublawal acts and those at Qever”, he added.
Mladenovic before those present has shown some of the cases when communities living in Kosovo have been violated language rights, and for this the Office of the Commissioner for Languages has reacted.
Some problems are similar to the past years, the strategic goals of the office will be the same in the future, and we believe that we will be able to identify problems in 3 pillars such as developing institutions' capacities, sensilibility and information published to understand the value of multilinguistics and the importance of implementing language and working to adhere to the law and to sublegal acts that better fit the law of”, he added. /EO/
