The director at the Gynecological Clinic, Myrvete Pacharada, says of Radio Free Europe that although there is a danger to the lives of mothers giving birth to children in their prime age, there has been no case of death.
“As health professionals, we are against mothers being born under the age of 18, due to risks posed to the young mother. It is good to use contraception in schools, institutions, to appeal for family planning so that the family can be planned over the age of 18”, Pacharada says.
In Kosovo schools, there are no subjects for sexual education. Professionals in this field view it as necessary to bring this subject into the curriculum.
Fehmi Krasniqi, co-ordinator for natural science at the Ministry of Science and Technology, simultaneously a map of the results of sexual education in U. NFPA, says the introduction of sex education in schools is necessary. According to him, the teachers are being trained for this subject.
To start a sex education class, it has to be experimental in a year. If the result is shown, it can continue as a subject. It's already started with instruction and we've put them in classes. From 2 to 6 hours, speeches have been delivered and we're training teachers for this” subject.
This program is from the World Health Organization, and there are two doctors in the group from the National Institute of Public Health and three education ministry officials from the field floor. So this started as an integrated subject in three subjects, in Biology, Civil Education and Physical Education. But, could it enter as a particular subject, political decision by the Government remains to be made. I think it's one of the most necessary subjects, Krasniqi says.
Due to Kosovo's lack of sexual education, three students from the Faculty of Psychologicality have come together and created an app called “Shnet”, so that they can help their peers get informed about their bodies and sex.
Dea Rexhepi, is one of the founders of this app. She says this app is being used by young people and comments on it as successful, considering the number of downloads being made to this platform.
As an app, it's been very successful. We measure this through the number of app downloads, but also from questions young people and young people ask both on social networks and from schools”, Rexhepi says.
Nevertheless, she adds that the subject of sex education in Kosovo schools would be very necessary.
I think it should be as part of the curriculum in schools, the subject of sexual education. That's why we've made it our Web site as a lack of adequate course, because in our society we've found it hard to get the right information about sexual education. So I think the subject would be the best idea to help young people with sex education and reproductive health”, Rexhepi says.
Learning about sexual education, body and gender is currently available in existing textbooks.
