So said today at the conclusion ceremony of the KUSA project “Elimination of barriers to equal opportunities, where it was discussed the importance of women's role in decision-making and women's employment, ending gender discrimination in Kosovo.
US Ambassador to Kosovo Philip Costnett said that Kosovo succeeds when women lead and such an example of powerful leadership is former President Atifete Jahjaga, who has conducted a campaign for the recognition of Kosovo in the world, and for the rights of raped women.
With 18 percent of working women, Kosovo has low female participation at work. This is not a challenge in Kosovo alone. The men around you aren't waiting until they're quite willing to apply for a job, research has shown that women apply only when they meet all conditions. People in leadership are obliged to help the next generation, to shake hands with those below. I am convinced that Kosovo will advance to gender equality”, the US diplomat said.
While, former President Atifete Jahjaga said that through this project, opportunities are provided to attend training in various areas under current circumstances in Kosovo.
“Discrimination on gender bases decouples women in Kosovo. There are many occasions when women are asked about family status in interviews. Women are discriminated against at work. The gender also determines wages, paid less than men. In my career I have tried to encourage women, supporting women's professional ambitions”, Jahjaga said.
