Peter Turnley is a prominent American photographer who made many of the important photographs of war images in Kosovo. But one of them touched the hearts of the people more than anything.
Such grief has also made a deep impression on the author of the picture, which the father's despair has long persecuted.
“Mustafai had told me that these were his children, and perhaps they had killed the Serbs in the war”, had commented on the photorrf.
Mustafa Xaya is the main character of this photo. That, however, was a story with a happy ending. After returning to Kosovo, he saw that his family was alive and secure.
In an article in newsweek, Turnley showed that he had approached Mustafa after being spotted as a great and strong man but hiding within himself much sorrow.
He cried out his wallet and showed me two little pictures of a boy and a wonderful girl”, and it was the photograph's comment.
Two decades ago, this picture stood on the cover of the newsweek International and continues to remain just as powerful today.
