American politics towards Serbia has not changed, it has remained the same for many years, the US Embassy told the Serbian newspaper Politika, when asked whether a Pentagon report on Russian influence in the Western Balkans could affect Washington's next course against Belgrade.
“Washington understands Serbia's interest in developing positive relations with a wide range of partners, and we expect other Serbian partners to show similar respect and support for Serbia's strategic goals”, the embassy's response reported.
In the U.S. Department of Defence report, provided by Radio Free Europe, it says that “Bilateral military relations between Serbia and Russia have been small before President Aleksandar Vuciq's Serbian Progressive Party took power in Serbia in 2012”.
According to the report, the Serbian Progressive Party has taken steps to boost its military relations with Russia, resulting in the signing of an official defence co-operation agreement in November 2013.
But, the US Embassy in Belgrade said the ambassador, Anthonyfrey, recently clarified that it is in US strategic interest that Serbia develops as a modern, democratic, prosperous state in peace with its neighbours, demonstrating full respect for rule of law and dedicated to guarantee the rights of all its citizens.
Politika reports that the US Embassy has also said that the US fully supports Serbia's declared “goal of European integration”, and that it respects Serbia's policy of military neutrality.
