A small coast has crashed people celebrating the new year on one of Tokyo's most famous streets.
Nine people were injured, one with serious injuries. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on the popular Takeshita Street, in Harajuku trade and tourist area, where even the famous Mayi shrine is located.
The road was packed with people going to Meiji for New Year's prayers.
The striker who led the car left the scene but was later arrested by police on charges of attempted murder.
The 21-year-old was identified as Kazuhiro Kusakabe.
The narrow road is known worldwide as the center of Japanese youth culture and fashion and the famous area of girls “Harajuku”, who dress in strange suits and boils.
The road was closed to facilitate entry into the shrine, which is a popular destination for people on the eve of New Year's Eve. Many Japanese visit Meij during the new year to pray for good luck next year.
