European Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn says he is sorry because of the lack of national unity about the referendum on the Agreement with Greece and recommends that citizens use their right to form their own future and state future.
For Hahn, as stated by Macedonia's news agency MIA, the referendum is the selection between the future turned towards the EU and isolation.
“This is the selection between the future of EU integration with concrete benefits for citizens such as rule of law, intrepidness for foreign investors and more and better jobs and roads turned towards isolation, stagnation and the loss of the only case for improvement and progress in key areas”, Hahn told MIA correspondent from Brussels.
The eurokom also compared this selection to the selection between nationalist concepts and EU integration and NATO integration.
“The selection is among those contained in the country's old nationalist concepts or acceptance of the future, with reforms and EU and NATO integration as a final step. This is not imposed by the EU or the international community. Euro-Atlantic integration was set as the country's strategic goal long ago. It remains that citizens will decide whether this perspective, with all its concrete benefits, will materialise or not”, Hahn says.
He hopes that citizens who have not yet decided how they will vote will be informed of the consequences of their vote.
I think that citizens should be aware that by this referendum, they are offered the chance to hear their votes and positions to form their future and the future of the country. The right to vote is significant democratic progress, which must be supported through active participation. To really exploit this right, citizens must carefully analyze the motives behind campaigns and the consequences from the vote ʹproım or against being able to make informed decisions”, the eurokomissari added.
Asked what he thinks about the movement, which calls for boycotting the referendum, answered that he is sorry because of the constructions.
“Maintaining the referendum means that it is empowered citizens to bring decision on the Agreement with long-term consequences to their country and their personal future. I'm very sorry that when national unity is needed to accept excellent progress, there are still actors who want more instruction than constructive work in the interest of the country's” future, Hahn points out.
He once again welcomed the “lidershipin” of the two sides in the dispute and reiterated that it is a historic agreement that opens the doors towards the EU and NATO.
It will now depend on citizens whether this prospect will become a reality, the Euro-competer says of enlargement.
The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's agreement with Greece for the name was justly called historical deplore on the part of the EU and the entire international community. It paves the way for resolving the dispute that is lasting almost three decades and has not only overshadowed the bilateral relations of the two countries, but also placed a major obstacle to EU and NATO access to IRJM”, Hahn said.
According to him, the determination and leadership of governments in both countries to confront this problem deserves full respect.
And that was also possible because leaders are focused on the future rather than the past, which is in the interest of the citizens of the country and especially the coming generations. With the following referendum on the citizens' hands is this positive future prospect of becoming a reality. So I repeat my call to citizens to inform and exploit their democratic right. This is an important selection which will set the country's future because the name deal opens the doors to Euro-Atlantic integration”, Hahn points out.
At one time, it estimates that this prospect is very concrete because the Council gave the European Commission mandate to start preparing for the start of the incriminating negotiations.
We immediately started these preparations. I personally was in Skopje in July to open the crisis process”, Hahn told MIA
