Austrian diplomat Wolfgang Petritsch, who was a supporter of Kosovo's independence, according to Pakos of Ahtisaari, has backed Kosovo President Hashim Thaci's idea of restructuring the border between Kosovo and Serbia. Petritsch, arguing with US diplomat Daniel Serwer about his writing opposing the exchange of territories, has said correction is supposed to be very small, even calling it cosmetic. But he has acknowledged that this correction, however seemingly small it will affect villages both around Mitrovica and Bujanovac.
“
It will not change the ethnic composition of any state, and thus there will be no such great effects as described in your assessment, which otherwise is excellent, “is the new “realism” in the Balkans”, the Austrian diplomat has indicated. The former EU representative in the Ramboulies and Paris talks in 1999, between the Kosovo and Serbian delegation, has mentioned in this context the intervention of Russia and Hungary.
The real question is the intervention of Russian / Hungarian media, neo-osman efforts (Izetbegovic and others), Gulf states investments in Bosnia and Herzegovina (but also in Serbia) and, above all, the rapid expansion of China into SEE. The Balkan Road and format 16 & 1 are the real challenge for the region and the EU.” has said it.
But for that very fact, he has said that the idea and solution offered by Thaci and Vuciq should be supported, even though he has stressed that this can be painful. This subsequently allows for support of a solution along Thaci's lines and Vuciqi. I'm aware of the pain that this is a disappointment to us who are old Balkan hands. But hey times are changing” wrote Petritsch.
But from his stance, against this idea of Thaci, has not changed Daniel Cerwer Ai has said there is no way to make these corrections, without Serbia taking all northern municipalities. He has raised the alarm that this exchange will exacerbate the situation. “I don't see any way to limit this in certain villages, or to do so, without Serbia winning northern municipalities. The effect of waves on my view has nothing to do with changing the ethnic makeup of each country. All the interventions in which you refer will deteriorate, no better, with a concession of this kind to ethnic territorial nationalism, has ended Serwer.
