On May 20, 1506, Italian seaman Christopher Columbus, in Spain, died at the age of 55, not knowing that he had discovered a new world.
He was a researcher and a businessman who first crossed the Atlantic Ocean and discovered America in 1492 under the flag of Castile, Spain. He felt that the earth is relatively small and that it can be reached as far as the Far East by sailing westward.
His misappreciated assessment of the size of the Earth also led to the calculation of food and drink reserves for such a long journey, an assessment that could cause the failure of his expedition, but fortunately, on the path of “prevented the unexpected” for the time, the unknown continent, America.
Still, Columbus died thinking that he had discovered his way to India rather than the new continent of America, when he later confirmed Ameriko Vespucci, according to whom this continent was named.
