The measure in question comes from residents' complaints about rent hikes due to short-term travel holidays, which book them through websites or various apps.
Palma Mayor says the restriction, expected to take effect during July, will be a model for cities suffering from the high number of tourists. But business associations complain that many families will be affected financially.
However, it has not yet been clarified whether the ban will be limited only to private apartments promoted by owners on various apps or pages. Houses and special accommodation sites, such as the so-called “chalet” (wood houses) will remain outside this restriction as long as they are not located within protected zones, near airports or in industrial areas.
Palma, as well as many other cities around the world, has experienced an extremely high increase in visitors, especially through the rental offered on the website or apps.
