Some of them created a career in many fields in those countries, and there is no shortage of those who in sports make mention of the name of the newest state in Europe, perhaps never heard of it.
One of these refugees is English team football player Charlton, Elizabeth Ejupi, who at age three along with her parents and older brother left the war in London, reports Telefraph.
There were massacres, murders, and we had to flee to save”, Ejupi explained.
Her mother was still studying at the university when she and her family moved.
They just had to leave everything, my cousins and uncle went to Germany. You find Kosovo in Switzerland, America, they're everywhere because of that” war, Kosovo football player adds.
Ejupi relates that during that time she felt that the trip to London was only for vacation.
I thought we were going on vacation, that they were going abroad for a while, it was an adventure”, the 24-year-old adds.
However, she and her family have not forgotten their homeland.
We are gone, but we still remember our roots, our culture and we never said it was past, forget”, says Ejupi for Telegraph.
Charlton's midfield has concluded that she also keeps in touch with her relatives who had the same fate as her leaving her homeland.
