A 41-year-old imam, married to two wives and father of six, is waiting to marry a Thai Muslim minor, 11, who claims to take her as a third wife.

The man, who is imam in his village of Gua Mousong, northeast of Malaysia, went to Golok, a town on the border between Malaysia and Thailand, to formalise his marriage to the minor, who is an acquaintance of one of his children and the daughter of one of his workers.

The media report that the future wife has given her approval and has claimed to be in love with the future man since she was 9. The parents have decided that the couple can live together only when the girl is 16 years old.

The Guardian writes that this marriage has caused outrage in the predominantly Muslim country, and activists on Sunday have labeled the groom a predator of children.

Malaysian Muslims under the age of 16 are allowed to marry by the permission of a religious court.

But the ministry of women and families in this country has indicated that there was no document of religious authorities that approved the union, which took place last month across the border to the south of the country.

Our editors went home and met the girl's mother. We are waiting for more reports before deciding on the future course of action”, Deputy Prime Minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was quoted as saying to Sunday Star.

The 41-year-old man could be imprisoned for six months if he married the girl without permission.
Malaysian activists have called for reform of the law to end children's marriage, which they said is widespread among the Muslim population in the country.

About 16,000 Malaysian girls under the age of 15 are already married, lawyers say.
