US President Donald Trump plans a change in U.S. immigration laws, affecting permanent American residence permits called Green Cards.

They will drop significantly to only 500,000 permits per year. That means half the permits given so far.

At the White House, Trump referred to “one of the most important reforms of the immigration system within a half century”.

Trump: Unqualified workers take the job from Americans

The law envisions that, in the future, the giving of Green Cards is done on the basis of a score system in both Australia and Canada that evaluate candidates' skills.

Trump said, that the new system will evaluate those foreigners who speak English well, have certain professional qualities and can care for themselves and their children, Trump said.

Trump criticised the so far-run system, given with the lottery or preferring only the foreigners, who have family ties with the US.

That is how many unqualified foreigners who take the job from Americans come to the country.

According to Trump, it burdens the “American workers, taxpayers and the resources of the municipalities”.

If less qualified to be pushed into the American job market in the future, this gives American workers a chance.

The new bill, prepared by senators Tom Cotton and David Perue, envisions the distribution of fewer residence permits for refugees up to 50,000 a year.

Since Trump's coming to power, the US government has been acting massively against illegal immigrants in the country. (dpa/afp)
