The city mayor's office has revealed that the investigation has shown that the fire was caused by a furnace on the first floor of the building, with which a small child was playing.
Although no more details have been disclosed, American media say this is the most severe fire in New York since 1990.
Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the little boy was three years old and he wasn't with anyone at the apartment at the time while playing with a furnace that accidentally caused the fire.
