Happens for the first time in Drenica, this is the Serb running for municipal assembly in Skenderaj

Kosovo is involved in the election competition fever for the October 22nd local elections. And, in many ways, what makes these elections differ from those of the past is the fact that in the Sqarew municipality, in the heart of Drenica, a 24-year-old Serb from the village of Banja Luka, Milos Kovacevic will run for an assemblyist of this municipality.

He says that since 2000, Serbs have not co-operated in good measure with Albanians and that they have no good relations like today.

Milos has made a decision this year that many of his countrymen have no courage to make.

His village is located in the Sqaheraj municipality, in the Drenica region, known as the most anti-Serb in patriotic, combat and heroic terms. He decided to run for an assemblyist in the municipal assembly and thus pave the way for other Serbs living in this region to compete for representation of their countrymen' interests, reports Serbian media.

The <x0DA came, first of all, 10 years ago, maybe even more. We had no Serb candidate in the municipal assembly or any representative who would protect our interests and rights in the municipal assembly and represent certain needs of people living here”, Milosi explains.

According to him, the greatest needs are fundamental living conditions that have been greatly difficult because Banja is far from the city.

Nedeljko Kovacevic, head of the Office for Communities and Return in the Sqaheraj municipality and citizen of Banja, says this is a good opportunity for Serbs living in this region to win a representative who lives and plans to stay in his homeland.

He believes that after years of fear of co-operation with Albanians, the time has come for Serbs to have their own representative in the Sqahright municipality.

He considers there are now conditions and opportunities for at least someone to try to become an adviser at the” municipal assembly, Kovacevic said.

Milos says Albanians have welcomed his candidacy for an assemblyist very positively.

“We have excellent co-operation and I hope this will continue mainly because of the future of all, especially young people. As you can see here in the village, we have a school, a garden, we have a municipality, we have an ambulance. Freedom of movement, some difficult conditions have contributed to the fact that none of the Serbs have run for an assemblyist in the municipality of”, Says Milos.

Local elections in Kosovo will be held on 22 October and then we will know whether Milos will secure a chair in the municipal assembly, media write.
