Nobelist mads Serbs, defends Kosovo in Belgrade

So has renowned German novelist Herta Myeller, who is visiting Belgrade as guest of the Book Fair.

She has shocked Serbian opinion, as in a conversation with readers she has declared Serbia to be guilty of her own suffering and her neighbours.

The writer has reminded her of her criticism of Serbia and the support of NATO attacks at the time of the 1999 bombing, citing her earlier statement that “Millosheviqi must stop for once and for all”.

Nobelist Muller has responded sharply:

I think the same “as I think today”.

“A man like Milosevic, who develops four wars within nine years and so practically builds graveyards can't be stopped in words”.

Kosovo and Bosnia have been subjected to much damage and evil because of horrible nationalism”.

I was terrified. I didn't expect that in a country like Yugoslavia, which at the time was a half-precious one, nationalism would erupt. However, this country has wronged itself”.

The Serbian Orthodox Church has also found fault with the horrors --”.

Myeller has said he is not pacifist, Klan Kosova reports.

I'm not a pacifist, and I believe some situations can only be solved with specific intervention”.

When the war happens, then measures must be made for one side to lose all and be defeated by the other”.

In such a situation, I believe military intervention is a human and moral position”.

“This can constantly be viewed by various examples”.

The alleged <x0... people that are attacked must have support from others if they cannot be protected by their own strength from greater power”.

“I would have been happy if NATO were to intervene in Romania as well, at Ceausescu's time”.

Speaking of dictatorships, Muller mentioned that her father had been in the SS's Nazi structures.

I'm not my father. Although, I've always felt the need to apologize for this”.

These statements have caused numerous reactions to the Serbian public, but the writer has said she has no intention of reasoning.
