US Changes Visa Rules for Foreign Students, Journalists

President Donald Trump's administration has taken another step to exacerbate immigration policy, limiting the length of visas for foreign students, participants in cultural exchange programmes and foreign journalists.
Under a new final regulation published by the US Department of National Security (DHS), F visas for international students, J visas for cultural exchange programmes and visas I for journalists will no longer be valid for the entire length of US research or employment, but will have a specific deadline.
The regulation will take effect 60 days after the publication of the Federal Record, provided it passes the review process in Congress.
The move is part of the broader policy of the Trump Administration for strengthening control of immigration, launched after its return to the White House in January 2025.
According to American authorities, the changes are intended to increase supervision of US-based foreign visitors.
Under the new regulation, visas for students and participants in exchange programmes will have a maximum deadline of four years.
While visas for foreign journalists, which could so far last for several years, would be limited to 240 days, or 90 days for Chinese citizens, writes ReutersI follow Periscope.
However, holders of these visas will have the opportunity to apply for the duration of the stay.
The DHS argues the decision comes from a significant increase in the number of visitors.
According to official data, over 1.8 million student visas were registered during 2024, an increase of more than 11% compared to a year ago.
Also, during the 2024 fiscal year, the United States issued visas for more than 500,000 participants in foreign exchange programmes and 37,300 foreign journalists.
The National Security Department stresses that increasing the number of these visitors has made monitoring and monitoring more difficult during their stay in the US.
According to the institution, there are also cases of students and participants in exchange programmes that have been standing in the country for decades with the same status.
Under the new regulation, people who want to stay in the US even after the visa deadline ends will have to apply near DHS for its extension or exit American territory and return with a new entry permit.
