Former UNMIK senior official, EU nominated him as new EULEX chief

On 15 July 2026, the European Council has named Portuguese Antero Lopes as Chief of the EU Mission for Rule of Law in Kosovo EULEX.
He has been appointed for an initial mandate of 10 months, starting on August 10, 2026. He will succeed Italian Giovanni Pietro Barbano.
“Lopas is a senior Portuguese official specialising in diplomacy, rule of law and security sector governance with more than four decades of national and international experience, including over 25 years with the UN. His tasks include the UN Protection Force in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNPROFOR) and, for six years, the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), bringing extensive experience in strategic leadership, crisis management and engagement with governments and international partners”, the report said.
