Climate alert in France, 99 scientists call for emergency measures

99 French scientists, mainly in the field of climateology but also in economics and sociology, have called for an emergency climate law in a joint article published today in the French newspaper Le Monde.
“We are all shocked by the days of extreme heat we just experienced” are the opening words of the article, with which 99 scientists give the alarm and seek measures to cope with global warming, which, they say, is causing increased heat wave frequency.
France's “People have experienced the consequences of climate change from close to”, the text says, underscoring that adopting new climate crisis legislation is “the issue of our collective survival”.
Among the priorities of this law should be the ban on funding and participation of all French companies, directly or indirectly, on developing new fossil fuels projects in France or outside of it, signatories stress.
They charge “cinism” French oil and gas company TotalEnergies, noting that on June 24, 2026, the hottest day in France's history, she announced her participation in a new fossil material project in the United Arab Emirates.
“The fossil fuels industry and decades of climate inaction have broken down the relatively stable climate Earth has experienced for 12,000 years”, cautions the authors of the article, adding however that “we can still prevent the world from becoming uninhabitable for large parts of humanity”.
The signatories of this open letter also require the creation of a green fund for financing local government projects aimed at accelerating ecological transition.
Repeated heat waves, they say, are a clear indication of climate change caused mainly by coal, oil and natural gas burning. They also stress that in the future heat waves are expected to become more frequent, longer and more intense. /Panorama
