Trump signs continuing state of emergency regarding Western Balkans

US President Donald Trump has continued the state of emergency over the Western Balkan region, including Kosovo, for another year.
The document bearing Trump's signature is published in the U.S. Federal registry.
It mentions Trump's 2025 decision to continue the state of emergency in relation to the region because of the ongoing efforts of individuals to challenge the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Western Balkan countries, undermine post-war agreements and institutions and engage in serious corruption that undermine rule of law.
The letter also mentions attempts to avoid US sanctions
On January 8, 2025, the president signed the Executive Order 14140, in light of developments in the Western Balkans, including continued efforts of individuals to challenge the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Western Balkan countries, to undermine agreements and post-war institutions, to engage in serious corruption that undermine rule of law and trust in democratic governance, and to avoid sanctions by the United States Government, with the aim of undertaking steps in an additional framework of the national situation regarding the Western Balkans. The actions of those who threaten peace and international efforts to stabilise the Western Balkans, including acts of extremist violence and stumbling activities, as well as the situation in the Western Balkans that prevents progress towards an effective and democratic governance and full integration into transatlantic institutions, continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to national security and foreign policy of the United States.”, the document says.
For this reason, the state of emergency national announced with Executive Order 13219, under which additional steps were taken with Executive Order 13304, which expanded with Executive Order 14033 and under which other measures were taken under Executive Order 14140, must continue to remain in force even after June 26th 2026. Therefore, in line with Article 202'ed) of the National Emergency Act (50 U.S.C. 1622ʹd), I'm continuing for a period of one year the state of national emergency announced with Executive Order 13219 concerning the Western Balkans.” concludes the document.
