Protest of Albanian students shaking V coalition LEN with Mickovski, why is the government of Kosovo silent?

Albanian students in Skopje have announced the organisation of a new protest, which is scheduled to be held on May 18th, 2026, at 16:30. The gathering is expected to take place in the centre of the city and include a large civic turnout.

Their main demand remains the possibility of giving the law test in Albanian.

However, organisers point out that during the last period the cause has expanded, including other issues related to the use of Albanian in the institutions of northern Macedonia.

The protest has been called under the motto “Bashkohesh with students all one”, while in public calls organisers seek mobilization of Albanian students, professors, civil society and political representatives. According to them, widespread participation is essential to addressing the problems raised.

In their public statements, students have indicated that the start of the protest was initially linked to a technical issue in the study process, but later other challenges have been identified affecting the institutional treatment of the Albanian language.

One of the organisers, Mevlan Ademi, has stressed that the initiative has already taken on broader social characters, demanding unity of all levels. According to him, the Albanian language should serve as a uniting element rather than a separation, while problems raised affect a wide range of citizens.

The rally begins at the Skopje Stone Bridge at 16:30, after which a march is preceded through the streets of the city.

But, there is no reaction from the Kosovo government, due to the political alliance Prime Minister-in-chief Albin Kurti has with the V coalition. LEN in northern Macedonia, but with Macedonian Prime Minister Hristija Mickoski himself. Kurti and Hristian Mickoski were seen very close, friendly networks with each other during the VLEN congress.

Meanwhile, support for the protest has also voiced some Albanian political representatives in northern Macedonia, as well as political figures from Kosovo and Albania.

One of them has been Albania's ambassador to Skopje, Denion Meidani, who conveys a message of the importance of Albanian language on the eve of the protest warned by Albanian students in northern Macedonia, for its protection and for conducting tests in Albanian.

Through a social networking post, Meidan has divided several verses from the poem “juha Threpe” and Dishta, stressing the importance of preserving national identity through language.

In Kosovo, Pristina chairman Progress Rama has declared that Albanian is not the privilege, but the constitutional and fundamental right of every Albanian in northern Macedonia, stressing that the protest warned on May 18th in Skopje, prior to the Stone Bridge, represents the protection of the students' dignity, identity and legitimate rights; He has added that this issue is not only student, but a broader national and democratic cause, warning that silence against discrimination means co-existence and calling for the unification of all Albanians indiscriminately to require law enforcement and respect of the Albanian language, while in the end it has underlined that the “Pristina is with you”.

Similarly, the chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Bedri Hamza, who has indicated that the student voice represents a generation requiring respect, equality and dignity for national identity. He says he will be close to any young Albanian who stands up to protect his language, identity and rights.

In support of the Albanian students' protest in Skopje, PDK deputy head Vlora Citaku has expressed it as a battle for fundamental rights and protection of the Albanian language. It is unacceptable for him to protest their identity and dignity in a NATO member state in 2026.

Political policy, reaction has also come from the world of art. Albanian-born singer Bebe Rexha has reacted in support of Albanian students in northern Macedonia, writing that the Albanian language is an essential part of national identity and a right earned by generations of sacrifice. According to her, Albanian students deserve equal rights and opportunities, while supporting the protest against the ban on giving the Albanian-language jurisdictional exam.

While singer Ilir Shaqiri, backing the students, posted an Albanian-language status as one of the main pillars of national identity. Many other public figures have emerged from the country and beyond
