Kurt failure: Promised poverty reduction, after 5 years, Kosovo's second poorest country in Europe

Poverty reduction and increased social welfare was one of the priorities of Kurti Government in 2021. In planning the Kurti Government, poverty reduction was listed among the main promises. However, after six years, Kosovo has managed to leave Moldova alone and rank as Europe's second poorest state, writes Periscopi.
According to the report published by World Atlas, based on the International Monetary Fund's data (IMF WEO 2025) for per capita GDP by purchasing power (PPP), Kosovo ranks as Europe's second poorest state, immediately after Moldova.
The report reflects the real standard of living and highlights the difference between political statements and the economic situation citizens face each day. Price hikes, low wages, massive migration and economic difficulties continue to remain serious challenges for many families in Kosovo.
According to report data, Moldova remains the poorest country in Europe with GDP per head of PPP for about $1700. Kosovo next ranks at around $20,400 per capita.
Meanwhile, Three months ago, International Monetary Fund report indicated that economic growth has slowed to 3.6 percent during 2025.
The report also stressed that inflation accelerated to 51504 percent, mainly because of rising food prices. The report noted that although formal employment has continued to grow, real wages have remained stable, while unemployment remains high at 10 percent.
According to the IMF, low participation in the labour market, especially women, shows that untapped capacities continue in Kosovo and in the workforce.
In terms of the shocking report, incumbent Finance Minister Hekrguan Murati has voiced optimism that Kosovo is rising economically.
We are up,” said, “we have passed a state. ”
Kosovo's “was the last when we took over. And now we have higher altitudes. If you look at the past years by 2019, the difference in other countries has been going to increase, other countries have gone off to Kosovo. We've narrowed the gap, but we've also passed a state, Moldova. We expect to pass the other states,” he said. / P ERISCOPIA
