The trial was scheduled for three days, but ended suddenly, broadcast albinfo.ch. The main defendant, a 41-year-old, was sentenced to three years and three months in prison. It should also pay the state 500,000 euros, in the form of the seizure of illegally acquired profits, reports the Austrian public broadcaster, orf.at.
The second 39-year-old defendant received a 24-month prison sentence, six months of which he must suffer unconditionally, while the rest on bail for three years. He too must pay 100,000 on behalf of the seizure. Together, they also must pay more than 3.8m euros in damages to the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK), which was the main victim of fraud.
According to the indictment, over a three-year period, more than 4,000 foreign workers were registered to social insurance in a nominal way and then unregistered, broadcast albinfo.at. Through these records, employers deceived the social security system with contributions from employers to pay.
Workers With False Documents
The investigation was initiated by inspections of construction shipyards in Steiermark, which showed irregularities. Authorities were informed of the triple when several workers presented forged documents.
