Albulen Haxhiu decrees Zejrullah Gashi as new head of state

Kosovo President Albulen Haxhiu's post has decreed Zejrullah Gashi in the position of the new head of state.
The news was confirmed by Haxhi himself through a Facebook post.
"Today I waited for Mr. Zeynep Gashi, to whom I handed the decree for appointment to the post of State Chief of State. Following the acceptance of the proposal and documentation by the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council, a careful and comprehensive review of the submitted materials, including also relevant information provided by competent security institutions and reports of organisations that have monitored the selection process. Given the importance of this post and the need for full functioning of justice institutions, I have acted in accordance with constitutional and legal responsibilities”, Haxhiu has written.
In the selection process, following an interview conducted on July 1st 2026, Zejrullah Gashi received the highest rating of 91.6 points. Next came Father and Dema with 89.3 points, Naim Abazi with 89 points, Rafet Halimi with 87 points and Albanian Fazliu with 86.3 points.
Candidate Father and Dema had filed complaints to the assessment of the selection process, but the Kosovo Prosecutorial Council rejected him at the July 10th meeting.
Meanwhile, on June 19, 2026, the KKP had overwhelmingly approved the candidacies of the five candidates that ran for the chief state prosecutor's position.
