Witkoff: We are not in talks with Iran

The United States' special envoy, Steve Witkoff, spoke on behalf of the Trump Administration, said the US is not in talks with Iran for now, although “we have had contact with them”. Speaking in an interview for CNBC, in the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Witkoff [...]

Speaking in an interview for CNBC, in the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Witkoff said that “Iran is an agreement that should happen”.

Asked for details, he avoided the answer, but he repeated that there is a possibility of an agreement.

Protests in Iran began on December 28, 2025, in the markets of the capital, Tehran, by businessmen angry over poor economic conditions, including major inflation and the currency's free fall.

The riots escalated rapidly, becoming widespread demonstrations against authorities because of worsening living standards and oppression of fundamental freedoms.

US President Donald Trump first warned that the United States was “willing and armed” and prepared to act if Iranian security forces were to kill protesters.

Later, he pledged very powerful <x0 actions”, if Iran would continue with the execution of protesters.

Trump then said he had personally chosen not to order military attacks against Iran, attributing this decision to Tehran's reported cancellation of hundreds of planned executions.

In another interview in Davos, Witkoff told Arab News that Iran should come and sit at the diplomatic table.

This should happen [for Iran to negotiate]”, he said. “This is important. If Iran goes, the region goes too, so we need to clear this”.

Witkoff insisted that the Middle East is moving in the right direction. Relax.

I think it's extraordinary what's happening. All, I think, are working together towards peace”, he said. All of them are engaged with President Trump's ideas about border peace and I have a lot of hopes”./Periscopi/
