Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani deserves today a round of applause for how she exceeded the Russian dictatorship to use Kosovo against Ukraine in the Balkans. This diversion always has the same supposedly <x0patiotic questions” that make Albanians or pro-Serbs, whenever Albania or Kosovo supports Ukraine.
The question is why we defend a country that does not recognise Kosovo.
Vjosa Osmani responded wisely, saying that recognition of Kosovo will come along with Ukraine's victory. And that's the essence of what's happening in Ukraine, as Ukraine's problem arose as a problem of a country heading west, breaking away from Russian influence.
True, Ukraine pro-Russian has not recognised Kosovo.
Even worse. In the midst of the shelling in April 1999, Ukraine's President Leonid Kuchma has at the time been the initiator for a meeting to stop the bombing. And it was logical. It's Ukraine pro-Russian.
The pro-Western Ukraine is at war with Russia in a two-year long war, not yet known for ending.
If Ukraine and the West lose this war, many prospects for freedom of peoples will be lost in Europe as well. Of course, it will miss even the chance that Ukraine will recognise Kosovo, that it will no longer be.
But this <x0patriotic logic” that, with the actions of the pro-Russian Ukraine, wants to judge pro-Western Ukraine, is pure pro-Russian propaganda, except for those who don't understand what they say, but are simply Facebook patriots.
D.m. These call to account for Zelenski's Ukraine, which is at war with Russia, why, when his country was pro-Russian, it did not recognise Kosovo and that country must now be left at Russia's mercy.
There's nothing more Russian than this thesis. Of course and most anti-Kosovo.
The Ukraine crisis has brought Kosovo's problem to water and turned it into a Western concern precisely from the Russian danger.
The “Ukraine Europe” co-chaired by Prime Minister Edi Rama and President Zelenski is an opportunity to give the world a clear picture of Southeast Europe's positions in relation to the conflict in Ukraine, and problems facing pro-Russian influences in the Balkans.
Two things became very clear about the Russian danger in the Balkans.
The first, that Serbia is not a free state that can make decisions affecting Russia and its influence in the Balkans, and is not ready to break free from Russian influence.
Serbia's inability to separate from Russia and its reluctance to even express sanctions against Russia indicate that we have a Russian problem in the heart of the Balkans.
The second thing that became clear is that Kosovo can benefit from the Ukraine crisis to strengthen its partnership with the West as it remains the most exposed country because of the climate of war Russia is feeling in Europe.
Alexander Vuciq's attempts to use Kosovo's precedent as an excuse for Russian aggression in Ukraine, indeed more honor Kosovo and raise Western attention to it than harm it.
So all of those who ask Albania why you protect Ukraine and others who are courting as patriots, why we support a country that does not recognise Kosovo, are asking the same questions Putin asks against the West, when he says why you freed Kosovo and I cannot release Crime, and why you know Kosovo and do not know me the invasion of Crime.
The difference is that the West in the Kosovo case has freed a captive country, while Putin in the case of Ukraine has invaded a free country.
Russia's occupied Ukraine cannot be abandoned on behalf of what it did as a pro-Russian state decades ago. She is being punished for leaving Russia's tutelela. So all those who want to curb Albania's support for it, or worse, using its non-recognition of Kosovo, are simply repeating what Putin says, trying to expand support for Russia in the Balkans.
Today's summit proved that Albania and Kosovo did not fall into this trap and isolated Serbia as the only pro-Russian country in the region. And this is what helps for more attention to Kosovo and respect towards Albania in the West.
