Why did the World Bank's Water Security and Canal Protection Project go into effect?
Last and today, after the attack on our critical water infrastructure (and energy) major concerns arose about energy, water and the economy. Earlier, the World Bank and the Government of Kosovo had a strategic project “Water Security and Canal Protection Project”. The implementation of this project would have ensured that such incidents did not jeopardise the water supply and functioning of our energy and economy.
This project had a solid basis: feasibility studies, economic and environmental assessments supported by the Investment Fund for the Western Balkans (WBIF). What happened? Why did not such an important project for our security and development become a reality? Has it been forgotten? Or are political differences an obstacle?
The Iber-Lepenci Canal is one of the main pillars for Kosovo's economy from the supply of drinking water, energy to the importance of agriculture and industry. This relates to national security as well. Today may be a good moment, not only to learn from past experiences, but also to seek accounts and make sure that strategic projects do not remain on paper alone.
