In the summer of 1996, Timothy With, at that time deputy state secretary for global issues in the administration of President Clinton, decided to visit Albania after the destabilising of the May 26th elections and the anti-Western course that the administration of Sali Berisha was taking. Through diplomats in Tirana, the US had asked for the repetition of 40 electoral areas in order to repair the degradation of the process that had occurred on May 26th, but Berisha had not heard it. He repeated only 13 areas, which he recovered again.

In an effort to repeat a strong message, Tim Wirt decided to travel alone to Tirana. But then President Sali Berisha rejected the meeting, recommending that he could meet with Prime Minister Alexander Meksi.

Reasoning my meeting rejection, Berisha told me that “does not need to wait, that he knows what message he has to tell me. I don't have to listen to”.

But while I expected the U.S. and American diplomats to become aggressive on this occasion, there was no such sign on the horizon. What happened was that all Western diplomats in Tirana called it a scandal, as the president was being primitive and was not behaving as a European leader. And this actually became his political tomb a few months later.

So it's not that the US was disturbed by rejection, but all Western diplomats classified it as an anti-Western culture.

The same is happening to Albin Kurti in Pristina today.

Edi Rama has today made ruthless efforts to expose Albin Kurti, as a leader with anti-Western formations, as if begging him for a meeting, which in fact is not as much a desire to do.

And he managed to expose it as such, not because of the nationalist and populist vocabulary Albin is using, not from artificial battles to keep Kosovo under tension, not from its ideological anti-Western theories, but simply from his primitive gesture of refusing to meet with it.

The first signal was the fact that the US ambassador to Pristina joined Eddie Rama's meeting with Vjosa Osmani and Glauk Konjufca, in fact showing who is there the home god.

For any Western leader, without even getting into the details of the reasons, refusing a meeting with a neighbouring prime minister, while the president and all the political infrastructure are awaiting him, is primitive.

I'm not saying then getting people illegal to insult, as they entered the meetings, or trying to create physical insecurity and hostile environment. It's the antism of his time in illegality.

So now it doesn't really matter how Albin will be justified, what he will say to the militants, whether they will experience it as a victory over the enemy or not. Now what remains of all this history is the portrait of a primitive leader stuck in his tower, who has no courage to confront anyone. Not even with the prime minister of Albania, who despite having declared him an enemy country, has difficulty hostile to his country. Eddie Rama's prayer to meet with him, “at any cost”, it's not really a matter of stuff or trouble. Among other things, it is to show everyone who Kosovo leads. Only a similar gesture took place in 1996, so Berisha could visa the whole West and for a year not know where to get his head.

It's a gesture that even in African tribes no longer happens. But Kosovo is not an African tribe, it is a Western country! The Prime Minister likes to be head of tribe.
