According to UN data for 2022, Kosovo will lose 50 % of its population by the end of this century. According to the same source, the same fate will be given to Latvia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania, Armenia, Northern Macedonia and Poland. The data has revealed to UN Population Fund representative John Kennedy Mosotti.
“The analysis of the population situation confirmed that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country with the lowest birth rate in the world (1.25), with high levels of migration and aging of the population, as well as deep-rooted gender inequality. By 2070, such demographic trends and inequality will lead to a reduction of the general population by more than 50 per cent, while the demographic structure will be directed towards an older population”, Mootti said.
He stressed that “sectors that are key to the country's socioeconomic development, such as education, health and social protection, will be at serious risk of collapse, while the labour market will face the lack of skilled workers and experts”.
