According to BBC News, which cited an analysis by Rystad Energy, a factory near Russia's border with Finland, is burning gas worth about 8.4 million pounds per day.
Scientists are concerned about the amounts of carbon dioxide and soot that are creating the new liquid natural gas plant (LNG) in Portovaya, northwest of St Petersburg.
The facility is located near a compound station at the start of the Nordstream 1 pipeline, which carries gas to Germany.
Finnish citizens reported seeing a huge flame earlier this summer, and researchers have noted a significant increase in heat from the object. While gas lighting is a normal process in the industry, researchers said the rate on which gas is burning in the factory was unprecedented.
