According to data from the Bank of Albania, at the end of 2021, ten biggest depositors at the end of the year owned 6.8% of the total bank deposits, down from 5.2% that had been this indicator a year earlier.
The same performance is noted for other groups of large depositors. 20 largest depositors at the end of last year owned 9% of deposits, against 7.19% in 2020.
While 50 major depositors kept 12.2% of the total, out of 10.42% who had a year earlier.
The weight of the largest depositors is pursued and reported by the Bank of Albania for the purposes of monitoring bank deposits. It should not be necessarily understood as the list of individuals who have the most money in the bank because it includes commercial companies.
Last year, bank deposits increased at the highest rate in the last decade. According to the Bank of Albania, by the end of 2021 they were worth $1.43 trillion, more than 10.9% compared to a year ago. On this basis, the value of money owned by the system's largest depositors can also be calculated.
6.8% of total deposits at the end of 2021 would be translated to an estimated 97.3 billion dollars, or about 810m euros, in the accounts of 10 depositors. By the end of 2020, deposits owned by the 10 largest depositors had been about 67 billion dollars. This shows that at absolute value the state of deposit of the 10 largest depositors rose by 45% last year.
The value of bank deposits of 20 largest depositors at the end of 2021 was estimated at approximately 128.8 billion dollars, up 38.5% compared to the previous year.
For the 50 largest depositors, the total bank deposits value is estimated at around 174.6, up by 29.3% compared to the previous year.
These figures show that the richest have continued to increase that share of wealth kept in the form of money in the banking sector.
A similar trend was confirmed by the annual reporting of Deposit Insurance Agency (ASD), which showed that about 109 thousand individuals, (4.2% and total of depositants, owned 646 billion bank deposits for 2021. In total, their savings amounted to 58% of the total deposit of individuals, rising from the 56.8% level totaling a year ago. / E. Shehu. /Monitor
